CHAPTER 22

Zoey

I climbed into my car and gripped the steering wheel. Thoughts about our conversation last night swirled around in my head. He told me he was single because he was burned by women before, and relationships weren’t worth it. I suspected he was cheated on. But who the hell would cheat on a man like him? The feelings I felt for him at this stage frightened me because I was experiencing something totally new and different. I found myself always wanting to be with him. He was always on my mind when I wasn't. Even with all the shit I had going on with my business, he was always at the forefront. His smile, laughter, controlling words, scent, and how he made my body feel like Heaven was all too comforting. He felt like home when we were together, and comfort wasn’t my strongest suit—it was what made me run.

I pulled into the parking lot, climbed out of my jeep, and stepped inside my bakery. I smiled at all the work that had already been done.

“Zoey.” Stefan smiled when he saw me.

“Hi, Stefan. This is really coming along.”

“Yeah. It’s looking good. Have you ordered anything yet?”

“Just a few things. I’m ordering the rest tomorrow when the money from Carter Management clears.”

“Carter Management?” His brows furrowed.

“Carter is an investor in Baked With Love.”

“Wow. That’s awesome. Congrats.” He grinned.

“I need you to go start picking out all the light fixtures, paint colors, sinks for the kitchen, etc. I wrote a list.” He pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket and handed it to me. “Want some advice?”

“Yes, of course.” I stared at him.

“Ask Ava for some help. You know she’s an interior decorator, and she’ll be able to help you with some of this stuff, plus get it at a discount.”

“That’s a wonderful idea, Stefan. Thanks. I’ll ask her.” I smiled.

After I left the bakery, I walked next door to Mojo Madness. I saw Julia and Ava sitting at a table when I stepped inside.

“Hello, ladies.” I smiled as I walked over to where they sat.

“Hi.” Ava stood from her chair and hugged me. “Sit down and join us.”

I hugged Julia first before sitting down.

“Were you just next door?” Julia asked.

“I was. It’s coming along.”

“I’ll go grab you a coffee.” Julia smiled.

“I’m happy you’re here, Ava. I was going to call you.”

“Oh yeah?” A smile crossed her lips.

“Stefan gave me this list of everything I need to start picking out and buying. He said to ask your advice.” I pulled out the paper from my purse and handed it to her. “I would love to hire you as my interior decorator for the bakery.”

“Are you serious?” She grinned. “I’d love to.”

“Here’s your coffee, friend.” Julia sat across from us. “So, any word on any loans?” she asked.

“Carter Management Group is investing, and I know you told him about the loan.”

“That asshole. He wasn’t supposed to tell you. Don’t be mad.”

“I’m not. I’m grateful. Thank you.”

“We girls always have each other’s backs and stick together.
